USS California (CGN 36) is coming soon!
Very soon, another new addition from the Land of the Free will be joining the waters of Modern Warships—the American cruiser USS California (CGN 36). Its arsenal and tactical options are truly versatile—it all depends entirely on your choice!
The state of California is not just a geographical point on the map of the United States, but a symbol of an entire era and a unique way of life. Here, the rugged cliffs of the Pacific coastline intertwine with fertile valleys, the dynamism of megacities with the calm pace of small towns. This state has long embodied the pursuit of the new: from the days of the “Gold Rush” to the modern era of technology and innovation. It is here that ideas are born that change the world, and where the very atmosphere seems to push you forward.
It is only natural that such a prominent name, inseparably associated with breakthrough technologies and global leadership, would one day transcend geographical boundaries and be embodied in steel. During the Cold War, when the confrontation between superpowers extended into the vast waters of the World Ocean, something entirely new was required — a true masterpiece of naval engineering, capable of projecting power and innovation anywhere on the planet. The spirit of the “Golden State” sought its perfect reflection in a project conceived not merely as an advanced combat unit, but as a floating symbol of technological supremacy.
USS California (CGN 36) — an American nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser named after the well-known state. It took part in active deployments and missions, served in two fleets, and became the first cruiser to visit Alaska after World War II. This is a versatile ship equipped with modular weaponry suitable for all types of combat scenarios, capable of supporting allies or operating as an independent unit.

One of the most notable features of this ship is the flexibility of configuring its arsenal. Most weapon systems are based on freely interchangeable slots, turning the ship into a true construction set! This layout not only provides a wide range of customization options but also allows you to adapt tactics on the fly to any combat situation.
Please note: the cruiser is equipped with the Oerlikon Skyranger 30 Hybrid. If you missed the opportunity to obtain this hybrid autocannon during the March event “Black Outpost,” you will have another chance. And if you already have this system in your arsenal, a second unit certainly won’t hurt!
The ship is also well protected against underwater attacks. In addition to torpedo armament, it features the RUR-5D ASROC — a modern modification of the classic American rocket launcher. The updated system stands out with improved munitions and increased rate of fire.
So what can this newcomer demonstrate in battle?
The American cruiser primarily stands out for its excellent mobility compared to other ships of its class. And if you use “Afterburner,” it can catch up with and even outrun some fast destroyers! Considering the ship’s relatively small size, not every long-range artillery salvo will be able to hit it.
Taking all this into account, it’s worth discussing tactical choices. Of course, thanks to its arsenal, the range of possible roles is extremely wide. However, the best approach is to play at long range, making full use of its mobility, size, and combined firepower of naval artillery and missile batteries. With this playstyle, you will attract far less attention from pilots or commanders who are mainly engaged in frontline combat, which will positively affect your survivability. Nevertheless, if enemy aircraft decide to attack you, you will have plenty to defend yourself with — the ship has more than enough air defense systems.
So what’s the final verdict?
USS California (CGN 36) is an excellent representative of versatile ships, combining the characteristic features of both cruisers and destroyers. This symbiosis will be a great choice for experienced commanders as well as for those just beginning to conquer the seas!
