ROKS Jang Yeong-sil is cooming soon!

Very soon, the ROKS Jang Yeong-sil, a state-of-the-art South Korean submarine, will rise from the depths of the eastern seas in Modern Warships. Thanks to its flexible weapon configuration, it is capable of striking any target using a wide variety of missiles, making it a truly versatile hunter of the deep.

ROKS Jang Yeong-sil is a modern diesel-electric submarine equipped with lithium-ion batteries, allowing it to stay submerged longer and maintain high speed without surfacing. This makes it quieter and harder to detect. The submarine is fitted with ten vertical launch silos designed to carry either cruise missiles or submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Armament

  1. Missile battery (ASM/SLBM)RUM-139 Swarmer [2x1]
  2. Missile battery (ASM)RUM-139 Swarmer [2x1]
  3. Torpedo launcher Mark 48 (533 mm) [3x1]

Key Combat Characteristics

Pros

  1. All of the submarine’s weapons can be replaced with any other available systems, providing maximum freedom in configuring its combat loadout.
  2. The missile batteries support both anti-ship and ballistic missiles, allowing flexible adaptation to targets and tactical tasks.
  3. The submarine demonstrates excellent stealth, maneuverability, and underwater endurance — key qualities for effective deep-water combat.

Cons

  1. The initial weapon loadout is not very effective, requiring additional investment in missiles and possibly torpedoes.

The introduction of the new South Korean submarine highlights the increasing importance of versatile underwater platforms capable of adapting to any combat environment. Thanks to complete weapon modularity and support for multiple missile types, the player receives not a narrow-specialized “hunter,” but a flexible tool suited for a wide variety of scenarios — from stealthy flanking strikes to long-range missile pressure on the enemy team.

The gameplay focuses on choosing the right weapons and making use of the advantages offered by ballistic or classical (anti-ship) trajectories, depending on the situation. Striking from cover with SLBMs remains the safest and most reliable form of engagement, allowing you to attack without exposing yourself unnecessarily. High stealth and strong mobility make repositioning between attack points fast and safe, while long underwater endurance allows room for maneuver even under enemy air pressure.

However, it is important to consider the submarine’s weaknesses. The default loadout does not showcase its true potential, and without selecting appropriate missiles or torpedoes its combat effectiveness will be limited. Starting a battle with the stock configuration after purchase is definitely not recommended — the arsenal must first be adjusted to your preferred tactics. It’s also unwise to let enemies get too close when relying on ballistic missiles: torpedoes may help you fight back, but they don’t always guarantee complete suppression of the threat.

ROKS Jang Yeong-sil is a modern multipurpose underwater platform that can become a powerful weapon in the hands of a skilled captain. It rewards thoughtful tactics and a well-chosen arsenal but does not forgive carelessness or lack of preparation. In capable hands, this submarine becomes a formidable force able to dictate the pace across the entire battlefield.
