ROKS HDF-6000 is coming soon!
A new ship—the South Korean frigate ROKS HDF-6000—will be added to Modern Warships very soon. Its versatile arsenal makes it a formidable opponent in any battle, regardless of who’s at the helm—whether it’s a novice captain or a seasoned veteran.
What should a modern frigate look like? Multi-role and unmistakably stealthy! Stealth technology has long ceased to be futuristic—today, it is virtually a baseline requirement for ships of this class. Navies around the world are gradually shifting away from monstrous giants, betting instead on maneuverability and compact dimensions. With advancements in guided missile weaponry, the firepower of smaller vessels has come remarkably close to the potential of heavy cruisers. At the same time, the loss of a major surface combatant is prohibitively expensive—both for the defense budget and the nation's reputation. It is far more rational to field a flotilla of more affordable, yet no less capable, corvettes and frigates. This exact logic guided South Korean engineers when developing this new design, aimed primarily at the export market.
Historical Background
ROKS HDF-6000 is a South Korean-built multi-role export frigate created as a well-balanced response to the challenges of modern naval warfare. At the core of the project, engineers implemented deep modularity: the platform architecture is engineered so international customers can flexibly adapt the electronics, sensors, and combat systems to their own requirements and budget. The designers paid particular attention to stealth. The faceted superstructure geometry, integrated enclosed masts, concealed mooring mechanisms, and radar-absorbent materials radically decrease the radar cross-section, making it difficult for hostile shipborne radars to detect the vessel long before it enters effective engagement range.
At the same time, prioritizing stealth required no compromise in survivability or strike power. The frigate is equipped with universal vertical launch systems (VLS) allowing for a versatile loadout: from long-range anti-ship missiles and specialized cluster-warhead munitions to anti-submarine rocket torpedoes. Task group protection is ensured by an advanced multi-function phased-array radar and a layered air defense network capable of repelling massive cruise missile salvos while simultaneously intercepting ballistic targets. As a result, the HDF-6000 represents a comprehensive combat suite, providing medium-sized naval powers with the capabilities of a heavy destroyer within the displacement and cost of a modern frigate.
Gameplay
How does the Korean newcomer perform in battle? The frigate earns its "multi-role" designation in full: a balanced armament configuration allows it to fight with equal confidence both in long-range positional duels and at the tip of the spear.
The ship's main striking force is the Haeseong-5 anti-ship missile. Its key standout features are a reinforced casing resistant to interceptor fire and a cluster warhead dealing devastating area damage. Defenses are in top shape as well: an anti-air umbrella consisting of Pegasus systems and the RIM-156 SM-2 SAM securely locks down the airspace against most threats. Moreover, the SM-2 is capable of intercepting SLBMs, turning the frigate into an indispensable mobile shield not only for itself, but for the entire allied team.
