FS Normandie coming soon!
Coming very soon to Modern Warships is a new addition from the land of love and romance—the French frigate FS Normandie (D651). While technically an anti-submarine vessel, it’s ready to take on any other target that crosses its path!
Normandy is one of the most picturesque and historically significant regions of France, where green meadows and ancient towns stand alongside the rugged coastline of the English Channel, and the atmosphere of cozy fishing villages blends with the memory of world-changing events. It was here, on June 6, 1944, that the famous Allied landing on D-Day began, becoming one of the turning points of World War II. Normandy is also renowned for its gastronomy: Camembert cheese, cider, Calvados, and the freshest seafood, all of which have long become symbols of the region. The beauty of its shores, rich history, and distinctive French charm have made the name "Normandy" known far beyond the country's borders, so it is hardly surprising that another equally beautiful vessel was named after this remarkable region.
FS Normandie (D651) is a modern French stealth anti-submarine frigate of the "Aquitaine" class. The ship is named after the region of the same name. Its hull design is similar to that of its predecessors and provides excellent seakeeping characteristics. The vessel is equipped with modular armament as well as new experimental systems designed for a wide range of combat scenarios. The ship is currently in active service with the French Navy.
Armament:
- Missile Battery (ASM) — Teseo MK2/E [x2]
- Missile Battery (ASM) — Teseo MK2/E [x2]
- Canon — OTO Leonardo (127 mm) [x1]
- Grenade Launcher — NRP Launcher (300 mm) [x2]🔒
- Helicopter — RAH-66 Comanche [x1]
- Autocannon — MU90ND Hard Kill [x2]🔒
- Air Defense — Sea-Ceptor ND [x2]🔒
- Air Defense — Narwhal 20A (20 mm) [x2]🔒
- Air Defense — SIMBAD-ND [x2]🔒
Without further delay, one of the ship's standout features is its defensive armament. The MU90ND Hard Kill autocannon launches anti-torpedoes that are immune to anti-torpedo countermeasures, allowing it to destroy both incoming torpedoes and submarines far more effectively than comparable systems.
As for the air defense suite, it may not be extensive, but it is highly effective nonetheless. Of course, no air defense system, no matter how advanced, can reliably stop a massive barrage of dozens of incoming missiles. However, the anti-aircraft systems carried aboard are more than capable of dealing with stray missiles and keeping overly aggressive enemy aircraft at bay.
The ship's offensive capabilities are equally impressive. Its excellent unique grenade launchers and two twin missile battery slots can dramatically alter an opponent's plans the moment their missiles reach the target.
What is the gameplay like on the new ship?
The French newcomer was originally designed as a dedicated submarine hunter. Its default loadout and most of its unique features are focused on anti-submarine warfare. However, what prevents you from replacing part of its armament and changing the frigate's battlefield role? In practice, nothing. Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—the air defense systems cannot be modified, which means you won't be able to create yet another universal "do-everything monster." On the other hand, this allows players to focus on more important aspects of customization and adapt the ship to their preferred playstyle, whether that means supporting allies from a distance or taking a more aggressive frontline role.
Its primary strength lies in long-range engagements, where its armament performs most effectively. Thanks to its solid weapon selection and respectable mobility, the ship can consistently pressure opponents without exposing itself to unnecessary fire. That said, the frigate can also be surprisingly dangerous at close range. Two twin missile battery slots, combined with highly accurate grenade launchers and quick reload times, can make life difficult for any enemy that carelessly emerges from cover or attempts to close the distance. With the right combination of guns and missiles, the ship remains a serious threat even in close-quarters combat and can confidently dictate the terms of engagement.
So, what's the verdict?
FS Normandie (D651) is an excellent choice for players who prefer not to spend time fine-tuning their air defense setup but still appreciate the ability to customize their ship to suit their personal playstyle. Thanks to its flexible armament options, the frigate can fulfill several battlefield roles while retaining its core specialization. Add excellent handling, strong firepower, and comfortable gameplay to the mix, and one thing becomes clear: this is a ship that will not sit idle in port and will undoubtedly earn a place in the regularly used fleets of many captains.
